Best Time to Visit Kharagpur

Kharagpur has a tropical wet and dry climate. Summer season, beginning during the month of March are quite hot and average temperature during this period is around 30°C. The rainy season is highly unpredictable and uncertain and is therefore not ideal for sight seeing and tourism. Winters in this city are quite pleasant with mild and cool weather. Therefore an ideal time to visit this city would be during the winter season, between the months of October to February, when you can enjoy sight seeing as well as take part in the festivities and celebrations here, during that time.

Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary: Located in the Kharagpur hill ranges, this sanctuary is known for its rare species of some exotic flora and fauna including wild boar, sambhar deer, chitals, four - horned antelope, nilgais, wood pigeon, blue jay, bulbul, mynahs, hornbill, spotted eagle, paradisefly etc. This place is thus a must visit, with your entire family, especially your little ones.

Kharagpur Lake: It is a beautiful and a picturesque lake, one of the most popular picnic spots in the city. It is an ideal place to spend some quality time with your family or for a romantic getaway with your beloved.

Rishikund: Located in the Kharagpur Hill Range, this place is known for its mesmerising hot spring. It draws huge number of visitors on festive occasions and celebrations. The religious fair held here annually, is a must visit.

Haha Punch Kumari: It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls, located on the on the western side of Rameshwar Kund. The enchanting waterfall against the scenic and picturesque backdrop fills the mind with ecstasy and a joy so great that it is indescribable by words.

Sitakund: It is a grand and elaborate fair is organised with much fanfare and devotion. It takes place with the active participation of the locals and people from near and far who come here to witness the grand mela and soak themselves in the spiritual ecstasy.

Rameshwar Kund: Situated near the Kharagpur Lake, this beautiful picnic spot is a must visit, especially during winter season. Set amidst beautiful and captivating backdrop, you also get to see here a variety of rare species of flora and fauna.

Shahi Masjid: It is a historical mosque located in the Kharagpur region that attracts hordes of devotees from within the city as well as its adjoining areas. This beautiful mosque, made up entirely of white stone appears like the Taj Mahal under the light of the moon. Another speciality of this mosque is that it has a Quran that is of the size of an old five rupee coin.

Apart from these places, there are numerous other attractions including the Kali Mandir, Durga Mandir at Gole Bazar, Jalaram Temple at Jhapatapur, Gurudwara at Subhaspally and at Nimpura, Kanaka Durga Temple besides Nimpura, Sitala Mandir at Puratan Bazar, Sacred Heart Church etc. Digha and Kosai River near the city of Kharagpur are popular picnic spots and serve as excellent weekend getaways along with your family.

How to Reach Kharagpur?

Being an important and one of the most populated cities in West Bengal, there is a systematic network of transport and communication, connecting this city to important nearby areas. As it does not have its own airport, the Netaji Subas Chandra Bose Airport at Kolkata is the airport nearest to this city and has regular flights to major Indian cities as well as to nearby countries. Called as the ‘Gateway to South Eastern railway’, the Kharagpur Railway Junction is one of the busiest railway stations in the state. Regular buses are available to nearby places from the Kharagpur Central Bus Stand. Cars, auto rickshaws and private vehicles form the major means of local transport, while private travel agencies offer bus and taxi services for sight seeing within and around this city.
